David Busch's Nikon J1 Guide to Digital Movie Making and Still Photography (David Busch's Digital Photography Guides) Details
From the Author Although they share some features, the new Nikon J1 mirrorless camera is very different from its cousin, the Nikon V1. Folks like you who purchase this model in the Nikon 1 lineup have your own expectations and uses for the J1. That's why I decided it was important to write this book, dedicated exclusively to this model, which is an entry-level camera with a lot more sophisticated features than the typical beginner's camera. It's easy to use, but calls for a different learn-up approach than the more advanced V1 model. So, I wrote this book specifically for the J1, rather than try to lump the two into a single book.Whether you're an enthusiast, just hope to become one, or simply want to take better pictures you really need this book written specifically for your camera to show exactly how to use every feature and option of the J1. If you're in love with photography, but so far haven't been in love with learning to use cameras, let me help you get the most from your Nikon J1.Although I also wrote a book for the Nikon V1, this one takes a kinder, gentler approach that's easier on those who are new to photography or to mirrorless cameras. Indeed, I moved the most technical descriptions on autofocus and other features to an optional "Nuts and Bolts" appendix, and concentrate on how-to and what-to information in the main body of this book.My Nikon J1 Guide to Digital Movie Making and Still Photography is divided into four parts. Part I, "Getting Started with your Nikon J1" includes three chapters that will help you set up your camera, start shooting great pictures and movies in minutes, and explain every control, button, and dial, and how to use them.Part II, "Beyond the Basics," has four chapters that show you how to use the V1's amazing Motion Snapshot and Smart Photo Selector modes, and the best settings to use for the Still Image and Movie modes -- including how to shoot incredible slow motion movies at 400 and 1200 frames per second. Other chapters explain how to fine tune exposure, and use the V1's lightning-fast autofocus to get sharp images every time. An additional chapter zeroes in on movie-making techniques and tips.In Part III, "Advanced Tools" I guide you through every menu option and offer advice on what each does -- or does not do -- and when you should, or should not, use a particular setting. Rather than re-hash the Nikon menu, I provide a wealth of useful tips. There's a full chapter on using lenses, with an analysis and review of every lens available for the J1, and another chapter on working with available light and flash.Read Part IV, "Enhancing Your Experience," to pick up tips you'll find nowhere else on using accessories like iPads/tablets, iOS/Android smart phones, using GPS, and working with WiFi to share your images. There are also introductions to available software, and some trouble-shooting/preventive tips.Whether you're a dSLR owner who has picked up the Nikon J1 as a compact or backup camera, a would-be enthusiast who wants to learn all of the camera's great features, or a beginner who wants to absorb the basics of photography while mastering the Nikon J1, sit down with me and we'll explore this camera together. You're in for a great ride!UPDATE: The FT-1 lens adapter was not available when I wrote this book. It requires a camera firmware update to operate with the Nikon J1. The firmware update also adds pixel mapping to the Setup menu. This information came to light after the book had gone to press. I purchased a Nikon D60 several years ago as an untrained hobbyist and also purchased the David Busch book on the camera. For me it was a big mistake because I was not knowledgeable enough for either the dslr camera or the level of information that he was imparting about the camera and photography. Since that time I have taken classes and read many books starting with the "beginner" texts, many of which did not satisfy my desire for a different kind of explanation of photography. In the meantime, I used many different kinds of point-and-shoot cameras from the most simple and advanced to the "consumer digital" camera because I am most interested in the darkroom processing side of photography, shooting in "raw" and processing with Photoshop/Lightroom. When I saw the ads and read the Nikon 1 J1 specifications, I decided that I might finally be ready. I purchased the camera and was truly amazed that it was exactly what I was looking for, both in size and capability. When I saw that Amazon would have the David Busch guide available, I knew I had hit the jackpot. I am having a difficult time putting the book down. The descriptions, explanations and detail regarding the camera construction and capability are the best I've ever seen in any camera guide. Or maybe I finally matured enough to understand what I'm reading. I can now understnd why his books are so popular. Initially, he spends time on the camera from every angle, using real pictures of each part of the camera in detail. Although I am just getting started and have not completed the book, I know I will be just as enthusiastic at the end as I am now at page 50.
